Blankenberge is a coastal town on the North Sea in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. Blankenberge is located a few kilometers northwest of Bruges and has long been a seaside resort. In the 19th century, tourism began to develop when the railway was built to the coast, making it easier for visitors from the interior to travel there.
Blankenberge is built along a sandy beach and has a promenade with housing, hotels and restaurants. A well-known building is the Belgium Pier, which extends into the sea and contains premises for exhibitions and events. Blankenberge is also home to the Sea Life Blankenberge aquarium, where various marine animals are displayed.
Blankenberge has around 20,000 inhabitants and the economy is partly linked to tourism and services. During the summer the number of visitors increases, especially from other parts of Belgium and from neighboring countries. Blankenberge has rail connections with Bruges and other Belgian cities, making it accessible for day trips. The coastal environment, the beach and the proximity to other towns in the region characterize the city's character.
