Brazil
Brazil is the largest country in South America by both area and population, and it is known for its rich culture, diverse nature and diverse society. Brazil covers large parts of the South American continent and borders almost all other South American countries. The country is home to the world's largest rainforest – the Amazon, which covers approximately 60% of Brazil's area and is home to an incredibly rich fauna and flora. It is home to everything from toucans and jaguars to rare orchids. The landscape is very varied – from the vast plains in the interior to the beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coast. In the south there are mountains and high plateaus, while the north is dominated by a tropical climate and dense jungle. The country has been influenced by Portuguese colonial powers, African slaves, indigenous peoples and later immigration from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This has created a rich and vibrant culture. Music and dance play a central role. Genres such as samba, bossa nova and funk carioca are internationally known. The annual Rio Carnival is an explosion of colors, rhythms and dance – one of the world’s most spectacular cultural events. Brasília is the capital of Brazil and is known for its unique and modern architecture designed by Oscar Niemeyer. São Paulo is the country’s largest city and economic center. Rio de Janeiro – known for its iconic landmarks such as the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain. The city is also famous for its carnival, samba and the beautiful beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
