Kokkola - a city with a rich history marked by shipping, trade and culture

Kokkola is a charming coastal city in Central Ostrobothnia, located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland. The city was founded in 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf under the name Gamlakarleby and has a rich history marked by seafaring, trade and culture. Kokkola is known for its well-preserved old town, Neristan, which includes 12 blocks with hundreds of wooden houses and farm buildings, the oldest of which date back to the 17th century. Kokkola is also known for its annual event, Kokkola Veneziad, which marks the end of summer with fireworks, bonfires and festivities along the coast. The city is an important economic center in the region with a diverse business structure. Leading industries include chemistry, cleantech, bioeconomy, boating, and trade and services. Kokkola also has a center for battery chemistry and is one of Finland's largest milk producers.
