Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Greenland is mostly covered by ice sheet, while the population mainly lives along the coasts. The economy is based on fishing, the public sector and tourism. The largest city and administrative capital is Nuuk. Greenland has its own government and is responsible for most domestic issues, while Denmark handles foreign and security policy.
Qaarsut Airport, West, is located in western Greenland on the Qaarsut Peninsula, on the mainland opposite the island of Uummannaq. Qaarsut Airport was opened in 1999 to replace the previous helicopter service to Uummannaq, which lacks its own runway for aircraft. From Qaarsut Airport, connections continue by helicopter to Uummannaq and other nearby communities. Qaarsut Airport has a short runway and is mainly served by smaller turboprop aircraft on domestic flights, making Qaarsut Airport an important part of the regional transport structure in the area.
