Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Greenland is mostly covered by ice sheet, while the population mainly lives along the coasts. The economy is based on fishing, the public sector and tourism. The largest city and administrative capital is Nuuk. Greenland has its own government and is responsible for most domestic issues, while Denmark handles foreign and security policy.

Uummannaq is a town in northwestern Greenland, located on a small island in the Uummannaq Fjord. Uummannaq is known for its characteristic mountain of the same name that rises behind the settlement. Uummannaq was founded in 1763 and today has a community where fishing, hunting and public services are important parts of everyday life. Uummannaq serves as a local center for smaller settlements in the area and has, among other things, a school, hospital and port. Connections with the outside world are mainly via helicopter and boat.

Uummannaq Heliport is used for scheduled helicopter traffic, primarily by Air Greenland, and connects Uummannaq with nearby communities as well as with larger airports in the region. As the area lacks road connections, Uummannaq Heliport is important for passenger transport, freight and public services, including medical transport.
