Kythera, Kapsali, Kapsali Beach

Kapsali Beach - one of the most well-known and charming beaches on Kythera.
Kythera (also spelled Kythira) is a scenic Greek island located in the southernmost part of the Ionian Sea, between the Peloponnese and Crete. Although geographically belonging to the Ionian Islands, it is administered as part of the Attica region. Kythera is known for its unspoilt nature, traditional villages, dramatic cliffs and seclusion, making it a peaceful and authentic alternative to more touristy islands. Kythera has a rich history that stretches back to ancient times, where according to mythology it is considered the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. During the Middle Ages and onwards, Kythera was marked by Venetian and Byzantine influence, which is still visible in the architecture – especially in the castle in Chora, the traditional capital. Chora is a charming village with whitewashed houses, narrow alleys and views of the sparkling sea. The nature of the island is varied, with lush gorges, waterfalls (such as Neraida in Mylopotamos), mountainous areas and hidden beaches. Some of the most popular swimming spots are Kaladi, Firi Ammos and Melidoni, all with clear waters and often surrounded by steep cliffs. Hiking and ecotourism have become popular with visitors looking for a more authentic island experience. Kythera is also known for its small villages such as Potamos, Livadi and Avlemonas – all with friendly locals, traditional food and rural charm. Local products such as thyme honey, olive oil and herbs reflect the island’s agricultural tradition.
Kapsali Beach - one of the most well-known and charming beaches on Kythera. Located in the sheltered Kapsali Bay, just below the island's capital Chora, it offers a beautiful combination of natural beauty, crystal-clear water and picturesque surroundings. The beach consists of fine sand and pebbles, and the water is calm thanks to its sheltered location between two bays. Kapsali Beach is divided into two parts by a small headland, and both parts are surrounded by lush greenery, low cliffs and buildings in the traditional Kytherian style. Here you have a fantastic view up to the Venetian castle of Chora, which towers above the beach. There are small taverns, cafes and shops along the beach. Kapsali is also a popular place for evening walks and boat trips, and small fishing boats and sailboats contribute to the lively atmosphere in the harbor.
