Milan - mix of historical architecture and modern design.
Milan is Italy's second largest city, after Rome, and is located in the Lombardy region in the north of the country. The city has around 1.4 million inhabitants, but if you count the suburbs, over 3 million people live in the metropolitan area. Milan is known as Italy's economic and industrial center, but also as one of the world's fashion and design capitals. Milan is famous for its mix of historical architecture and modern design. One of the city's most famous landmarks is Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano), one of Europe's largest Gothic cathedrals, which took almost 600 years to complete. Next door is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a beautiful 19th-century shopping mall with a glass roof and many shops. Milan is Italy's financial center and has the country's largest stock exchange, the Borsa Italiana. Many large companies and banks have their headquarters here. The city is also important in advertising, media, technological development and architecture. With its strategic location in Europe, Milan is a hub for business, transport and innovation.
Bosco Verticale – in the middle of the picture are the Bosco Verticale residential buildings, a unique construction project located in the Porta Nuova area of central Milan. It consists of two tall residential buildings that are covered in trees, shrubs and other plants, not only on the ground but also on the balconies and facades. The taller residential building is 110 meters high with 26 floors and the lower residential building is 76 meters high with 18 floors. The project was designed by the Italian architect Stefano Boeri and inaugurated in 2014. In total, there are over 900 trees, 5,000 shrubs and 11,000 other plants planted on the two residential buildings. The plants have been selected to suit the climate of Milan and to attract birds and insects, creating a form of biodiversity in the middle of the city.
