Naples - the city where pizza is said to have been invented

Naples (Napoli in Italian) is a major city in southern Italy, located on the Bay of Naples and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The city is the capital of the Campania region and is the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan, with approximately 950,000 inhabitants in the city and over 3 million in the metropolitan area. Naples is located near the active but closely monitored volcano Vesuvius. Vesuvius is best known for the eruption in 79 AD, which destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. In Naples, people began baking flatbreads with tomato sauce, something that was first seen as poor people's food, because tomatoes were cheap and considered simple. These pizzas were sold as fast food on the streets. According to popular tradition, Pizza Margherita was created in 1889, when the Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples. A local pizza baker named Raffaele Esposito baked a pizza in the colors of Italy: Red – tomato sauce, White – mozzarella, Green – basil. He named the pizza Pizza Margherita in honor of the Queen. Although there is no definitive evidence of the event, it has become part of pizza history.
