Grand Canal – Venice's great waterway

The Grand Canal (or Canale Grande in Italian) is Venice’s main canal and the city’s most important waterway. It winds like a big S through the city center, dividing Venice into two parts. With its beautiful palaces, churches, and bridges along its sides, the Grand Canal is both a practical transportation route and a historical jewel. Along the banks of the Grand Canal are over 170 buildings, most of which were built between the 13th and 18th centuries. Here you can see a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Since Venice has no cars, the Grand Canal is used as a main street – albeit on water. Local public transportation, tourist boats, and private transport run here. Many people use the vaporetto, the Venetian water bus, to get between different parts of the city.
