Sapporo - the fifth largest city in Japan
Sapporo (札幌) is the capital of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, and the fifth largest city in the country. With its wide streets, modern buildings, and snowy winters, Sapporo stands out from many other Japanese cities, with a unique character that combines nature, history, and urban development. Sapporo was first founded in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, as part of Japan's modernization project. Unlike many other Japanese cities that have their roots in the Middle Ages, Sapporo has a relatively short history. It is laid out in a grid pattern, inspired by Western urban planning. Sapporo is best known for the Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri), held every February and attracting millions of visitors. During the festival, huge ice sculptures and snow figures are built in the city's central park – Odori Park. Concerts and light shows are also held here in the winter landscape.
Another well-known landmark is the Sapporo TV Tower, which offers beautiful views of the city, especially at night. The tower is 147.2 meters high and was built in 1957. It is constructed of steel and is inspired by Tokyo's famous Tokyo Tower, but is smaller in size. The tower's design and location make it easy to recognize in the city's skyline. One of the tower's main attractions is its observation platform at a height of about 90 meters. From there, visitors get a panoramic view of Sapporo, including Odori Park, the city's grid pattern, the surrounding mountains and, on clear days, Mount Yotei - often called "Ezo Fuji" for its resemblance to Fuji.
