Calgary is a major city in southern Alberta, Canada, located at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River. Calgary serves as an economic centre, particularly in the energy, finance and technology sectors. Calgary has grown rapidly since the mid-20th century and today has a distinct metropolitan feel with modern buildings, public transport and several universities and cultural institutions. The Centre Street Bridge, which opened in 1916, is a concrete bridge that crosses the Bow River and connects downtown Calgary with the northern suburbs. The Centre Street Bridge is known for its four stone lions and for its role in the city's transportation system. The bridge is used by both vehicles and pedestrians and has a simple but distinct architecture. Above the bridge, in the Crescent Heights neighbourhood, is the Blue Bench viewpoint – a blue-painted bench that has become an informal place to look out over the city centre. From here, you can clearly see downtown Calgary, the Bow River and the nearby bridges. The site is accessible to the public and is often visited by both residents and tourists.
