Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding - a central facility for the conservation and research of giant pandas
Shenshuping Ghengdu Panda Center, also known as Wolong China Giant Panda Garden Shenshuping Base, is a central facility for the conservation and research of giant pandas, located in Ghengdu Township, part of Wolong National Nature Reserve in Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. After the devastating 2008 earthquake, a new facility was built in Ghengdu to provide a safer home for the pandas. The Shenshuping Base, which opened in 2016, covers an area of approximately 150 hectares and is home to over 50 giant pandas, including several panda cubs.
The facility is divided into three main areas:
• Shenshuping Giant Panda Breeding and Visiting Area – the main visiting area and covers about 450 mu (about 30 hectares). There are 59 sets of panda enclosures that can accommodate between 60 and 80 pandas. Visitors can see pandas of various ages, including adults, young and panda cubs.
• Captive Giant Panda Re-wilding Training Area – the area is intended for training pandas that are being prepared for reintroduction into the wild.
• Wild Release Area – the final step in the reintroduction process, where the pandas gradually get used to living in the wild.
The webcam is presented by Shenshuping Ghengdu Panda Center and Explore.org.
