Vlieland – the peaceful pearl of the Wadden Sea
Vlieland is one of the five inhabited Wadden Sea islands in the Netherlands and belongs to the province of Friesland. It is a small island, only about 20 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, with a population of about 1,100 people. The island's only village and settlement is called Oost-Vlieland, which means "East Vlieland". Vlieland is known for its untouched nature, wide sand dunes, quiet beaches and large forests. A large part of the island is a nature reserve, and car traffic is severely restricted to protect the environment. Only permanent residents are allowed to have cars, which makes the island perfect for cycling and hiking. The western part of the island consists largely of sand dunes and is called "de Vliehors", a large sand field that is also used as a military training area.
Oost-Vlieland - the only village on the island and located on the eastern part. Here you will find all the basic amenities: shops, restaurants, hotels and a small harbor where the ferry from Harlingen docks. The village has a charming atmosphere with old captain's houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, narrow streets and historic buildings.
Vlieland attracts many nature lovers and people seeking peace and quiet.
