Nepal, Himalayas
Nepal is a mountainous, landlocked country located between India and China (Tibet) in South Asia. It is best known for being home to the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain range, and the majestic Mount Everest – the world's highest mountain, which rises to 8,848 meters above sea level. Despite its small area, approximately 147,500 square kilometers, Nepal contains an enormous variety of landscapes, from the lowland subtropical Terai plains to the snow-capped peaks of the north. Ten of the world's fourteen highest peaks are in Nepal. The country also has several national parks, such as Chitwan (with rhinos and tigers) and Sagarmatha (around Mount Everest), which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The capital, Kathmandu, is a cultural center, known for its historic temples, palaces, and colorful markets. Nepal has a population of about 30 million people (2024), consisting of over 100 ethnic groups and many different languages. The official language is Nepali, but English is often spoken in tourist areas. Trekking tourism is one of the country's main sources of income, and Nepal is known for its hospitality and teahouse culture along the trails. Nepal is accessed via Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Domestic flights are often used to reach the mountainous areas. The road network is limited outside the cities, especially in the mountainous parts.
