Hammerfest - known as the world's northernmost city
Hammerfest is a city in Finnmark county in northern Norway, located on the island of Kvaløya. It is located on the coast of Sørøysundet, just north of the village of Rypefjord. The city is known as the world's northernmost city with more than 10,000 inhabitants. Hammerfest is also one of Norway's oldest cities and has a rich history marked by fishing, trade and Arctic life. During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed by German troops, but was rebuilt after the war. Today, Hammerfest is a modern community with strong ties to Sami culture and Arctic traditions. From May 15 to July 31, the sun is up 24 hours a day, and from November 23 to January 19, the sun does not rise above the horizon.
