Narvik - beautifully situated by the Ofotfjord

Narvik is located in northern Norway, in Nordland county, close to the border with Sweden. The city is beautifully situated on the Ofotfjord, surrounded by high mountains and fjord landscapes. Narvik is also known for its role in World War II and as a center for winter sports and mountain hiking. During the Battle of Narvik in 1940, several ships were sunk in the Ofotfjord, which today makes the area a unique cold-water wreck diving destination. Narvik and the Malmbanan have a strong and historically important connection to the mining industry of Sweden and Norway, especially through the mining company LKAB. The Malmbanan is crucial for transporting iron ore from the mines in Sweden to ice-free ports in Norway, all year round. Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE) is about 1 hour's drive from the city center.
