Trondheim - one of Norway's oldest located on the Trondheimsfjord
Trondheim is one of Norway's oldest and most important cities, located on the beautiful Trondheimsfjord in the Trøndelag province. The city was founded in 997 by the Viking king Olav Tryggvason, and has since played an important role in Norwegian history. One of Trondheim's most famous landmarks is Nidaros Cathedral, an impressive Gothic cathedral built over the grave of St. Olav the Saint, Norway's patron saint. The city has an active cultural life with concerts, festivals and museums, as well as a strong focus on sustainability and the environment. There are also good opportunities for outdoor activities here - with proximity to forests, mountains and the sea. Areas such as Bymarka offer nice hiking trails and ski trails all year round. Pirbadet is a large water park (adventure pool) that offers activities for children, families, exercisers and swimmers. It is a popular excursion destination for both locals and tourists. Pirbadet is Norway's largest indoor pool and is located right on the Trondheimsfjord in the Brattøra area, near the city center.
