The University of Innsbruck - one of Austria's largest and most prestigious universities
The University of Innsbruck is one of Austria's largest and most prestigious universities. It is located in the city of Innsbruck, the capital of the state of Tyrol, surrounded by the high alpine peaks of the Inn Valley. The university's various buildings are spread across Innsbruck's city center, but most are within walking distance of each other. Some of the departments are located at Innrain, while others are located in the university campus in Hötting, or near the medical faculty. The university has a strong regional anchoring but also an international reputation in several research areas. The university is known for research in, among other things: Atmospheric science and climate research, alpine ecology and geosciences, philosophy, history and linguistics, astrophysics and quantum physics.
Innsbruck has a population of around 130,000 inhabitants and is both a regional centre and a renowned international destination for sports, culture and education. Innsbruck's geographical location between steep mountain slopes makes it very characteristic. In the north rises the Nordkette, a mountain range that is easily accessible by cable car directly from the centre, and in the south lies Patscherkofel. Innsbruck is a city where history and modernity meet. In the old town, traces of the Habsburg era can be seen, with well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow alleys and buildings in Baroque and Renaissance styles. The most famous is the "Goldenes Dachl" (Golden Roof), a balcony with gilded roof tiles that was built in the 15th century.
