Saint Martin (also Saint Martin or Sint Maarten) is a small but unique Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles, east of Puerto Rico. The island is particularly notable for being shared between two nations – France and the Netherlands – making it the world's smallest inhabited island shared by two countries.
• The northern part (about 60% of the island) is French and belongs to the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Martin. Capital: Marigot.
• The southern part is Dutch and constitutes the country of Sint Maarten, which is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Capital: Philipsburg.
The island has a total population of approximately 75,000 people (2024), and both sides rely heavily on tourism. Saint Martin has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round and a dry and rainy season. The island has a hilly interior, lush vegetation, and numerous white sandy beaches, bays, and coral reefs. Tourism is the main source of income for both parts of the island, and Saint Martin is a popular destination for cruise ships, sailing, and luxury tourism. The island has two airports: Princess Juliana International Airport (Dutch side) and L'Espérance Airport (French side, for regional flights).

The airport is located near Simpson Bay Lagoon and is particularly known for its dramatic runway that passes very close to the popular Maho Beach. The airport has a single runway, Runway 10/28, which is 2,300 meters long. It is known for its low approaches, where aircraft pass only a few meters above Maho Beach before landing. The airport serves as a hub for the regional airline Winair, which offers connections to other islands in the Caribbean, including Anguilla, Saba, Saint Barthélemy and Sint Eustatius.
