Basel, view towards the river Rhine and the bridge Mittlere Brücke

Basel - a cultural and historical city in northwestern Switzerland, located on the Rhine River, where Switzerland meets France and Germany.
Basel is located in northwestern Switzerland on the border with Germany and France. Basel is a city where culture, history and international dynamics meet. Basel is naturally divided by the Rhine River (Rhein), which flows through the city center and creates a clear boundary between the historic old town (Grossbasel) on the southern side and the lively Kleinbasel on the northern side. The Rhine is more than just a watershed – it is the city’s artery and an important part of its identity. In the middle of this watershed, the Mittlere Brücke connects the two city districts. The bridge, whose name means “middle bridge”, is one of Europe’s oldest river bridges north of the Alps. The first version was built as early as 1226 and played a crucial role in trade and communication in medieval Basel. Today’s stone bridge, which replaced the original wooden bridge at the beginning of the 20th century, is both a functional transport route and a symbol of the city’s history. From the Mittlere Brücke you have a striking view of the Rhine waters and Basel's architecture, with church towers, colorful house facades and trams passing over the bridge. You can also see the traditional wooden boats, "Weidlinge", used during the summer months by bathers who float downstream in the Rhine stream - a local tradition and a clear sign of how strongly the people of Basel live with their river. Basel is also a center for art, education and science, with famous institutions such as the Kunstmuseum, the university (Switzerland's oldest) and the annual Art Basel art fair.
