Puerto de la Luz – one of Spain's most important ports

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands, located in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria. With approximately 380,000 inhabitants (2024), it is also one of the ten largest cities in Spain. Along with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas shares the status of capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. Las Palmas is located on the Atlantic Ocean and has a mild subtropical climate with evenly warm temperatures all year round, making it a popular tourist destination and an attractive place to live. Las Palmas is surrounded by both mountains and sea, providing beautiful views and many opportunities for outdoor activities. Las Palmas is an important economic center, especially thanks to Puerto de la Luz, one of Spain's largest and busiest ports. The port is central to both freight transport, fishing, passenger ferries and cruise tourism. Its strategic location makes it an important hub between Europe, Africa and Latin America. Founded in 1478, the city has a rich history marked by colonial influence, seafaring and trade. The historic district of Vegueta offers cobblestone streets, old buildings and attractions such as the Catedral de Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón (Columbus House), where Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed during his voyage to America. Las Palmas also has a vibrant cultural life with theatres, museums, music festivals and the Las Palmas Carnival, which is one of the largest and most colourful in Spain. One of the city's main attractions is Playa de Las Canteras, a several-kilometre-long city beach that is much appreciated by locals and visitors alike.

Puerto de la Luz - also known as Puerto de Las Palmas, is the major port of Las Palmas. It is one of Spain's busiest ports and plays a central role in trade, passenger traffic and shipping between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Thanks to its strategic location in the Atlantic, Puerto de la Luz has developed into an international hub for both commercial and logistical traffic. The port began to develop in the late 19th century and has since expanded greatly. During the 20th century, it became an important place for bunkering fuel, the fishing fleet and transoceanic trade. Today, Puerto de la Luz is a modern port facility with high capacity and advanced infrastructure. The port is also one of the largest bunkering ports in the Atlantic, meaning that ships from all over the world stop here to refuel.
