Arrecife Port - in eastern Lanzarote, a central point for both freight and passenger traffic
Lanzarote is one of the seven main islands of the Spanish Canary Islands archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the northwestern coast of Africa. It is the easternmost and fourth largest of the islands, with an area of approximately 845 square kilometers and a population of approximately 156,000 inhabitants (2024). Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote. Lanzarote is known for its spectacular volcanic landscape, characterized by over 300 volcanoes. The island has a hot and dry climate with very little rainfall and mild temperatures all year round, making it a popular destination – especially among European tourists. An impressive natural area is the Timanfaya National Park, where visitors can experience an almost lunar-like landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions in the 18th century. Lanzarote's unique style is strongly influenced by the artist and architect César Manrique, who fought to preserve the island's natural beauty and traditional building style. César Manrique's influence is visible in everything from whitewashed houses to art installations and tourist attractions.
César Manrique was a Spanish artist, architect and environmentalist from Lanzarote. His legacy lives on in the island's architecture and he is considered a cultural icon in Lanzarote. César Manrique tragically died in a car accident on September 25, 1992. The accident occurred near his home in Tahíche, just outside the Fundación César Manrique, the museum and cultural center that today honors his life and work.
Arrecife Port - located in the east of Lanzarote, it serves as a central point for both cargo and passenger traffic to and from the island. Arrecife Port is divided into different sections, where commercial cargo handling and ferry traffic coexist with the reception of cruise ships. Cruise traffic has become a growing part of the port's business, especially during the winter months, when many ships dock on routes between the Canary Islands and other parts of the Atlantic. Cruise ships calling at Arrecife usually dock at Los Mármoles Quay, which is adapted for larger ships. This provides terminal facilities with basic services such as information desks, transport connections and access to local tours. Transport into central Arrecife is either by shuttle buses or on foot, depending on the distance to the anchorage. Arrecife Port is conveniently located close to the city centre, allowing cruise passengers to reach shops, cafes, markets and attractions within walking distance. In addition to passenger traffic, the port also plays an important role in Lanzarote's supply, with container and tanker ships calling regularly.
