Tenerife – the largest of the Canary Islands

Tenerife is the largest and most populous of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, located off the coast of northwestern Africa. Tenerife has an area of approximately 2,034 square kilometers and a population of approximately 950,000 inhabitants (2024), many of whom live in or around the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tenerife has a spectacular and varied nature, ranging from green valleys and forests in the north to drier landscapes in the south. The island is dominated by Teide – an active volcano and Spain's highest mountain with a height of 3,718 meters. Tenerife has a mild subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The northern and southern climates differ – the north is wetter and greener, while the south is sunnier and drier, making it popular with tourists. Tenerife has a rich culture, with influences from Spain and the islands' indigenous people, the Guanches. Tenerife is famous for its carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is one of the largest and most colorful in the world after Rio de Janeiro.

Tenerife North Airport - officially Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna (IATA code: TFN), is one of two international airports on Tenerife. The airport is located approximately 11 km west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and close to the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The airport opened in 1946 as Tenerife's first civilian airport and was previously called Los Rodeos. It was given its current name in 2011. The airport has played an important role in the development of the island and was Tenerife's main airport until 1978.
