Lekeitio

Lekeitio - a fishing village with a Basque soul on the Bay of Biscay
Lekeitio is a small but charming coastal town located in the Basque Country, in northern Spain, on the dramatic coastline of the Bay of Biscay. It is located about an hour's drive from Bilbao and has just over 7,000 inhabitants. The town has a strong maritime identity, with a history that dates back to the Middle Ages, when Lekeitio was an important fishing port. To this day, fishing is a central part of the town's life and identity. The picturesque port is located in the center, surrounded by traditional Basque houses with colorful wooden balconies and small restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood straight from the sea. Lekeitio has two main beaches, Playa de Isuntza and Playa de Karraspio. These are popular during the summer months for both swimming and beach walks. At low tide, you can walk out to San Nicolás Island, a small green island in the middle of the bay, which is one of Lekeitio's most unique natural experiences. Lekeitio is also known for its strong Basque culture and traditions. The Basque language, Euskara, is widely spoken here, and the city takes pride in its local festivals, especially the annual San Antolín Festival in early September.
