Reus - the birthplace of the world-famous architect Antoni Gaudí

Reus is a medium-sized city located in the Catalan region of Tarragona, about 10 kilometers inland from the east coast of Spain and the popular resort of Salou. With around 100,000 inhabitants, Reus is an important commercial and cultural city in Catalonia, but also a center for architecture, history and local crafts. Reus is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the world-famous architect Antoni Gaudí, although he did most of his life's work in Barcelona. Although none of Gaudí's buildings are in Reus, the city is filled with modernist architecture from the same era, created by other Catalan architects such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner. In the heart of the city is Plaça del Mercadal, a lively square surrounded by cafes and shops. Here you will find the impressive Casa Navàs, one of Spain's best-preserved modernist residential buildings, open to the public. Reus also has a Gaudí Center, an interactive museum that tells the story of Gaudí's life, ideas and influence on modern architecture. In addition to its cultural importance, Reus is a traditional trading center and has long been known for its production of wine and vermouth – a sweetened, spiced aperitif that is still produced in the city. The local cuisine is characterized by Catalan flavors, with dishes based on olive oil, fresh vegetables, fish and meat.
