Fort William – the gateway to the Scottish Highlands

Fort William is a small town in western Scotland, situated on Loch Linnhe, at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. The town has a population of around 10,000 and is an important centre for outdoor recreation and tourism. Fort William is often referred to as the "Outdoor Capital of the UK" due to its location near mountains, lochs and forests. Visitors come here to walk, climb, cycle, paddle and ski. It is also the starting or finishing point for several walking routes, such as the famous West Highland Way. Fort William has a strategic location and has historical significance as a military post during the Jacobite rebellions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, Fort William is a popular tourist resort with hotels, shops and proximity to the Jacobite Steam Train – a train that crosses the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films.
