Southampton – a historic port city in southern England
Southampton is a city on the south coast of England, in the county of Hampshire, with a population of approximately 250,000. The city is known for its maritime heritage, its large port and its role as the port of departure for the Titanic in 1912. It also has a university, several museums and a rich cultural life. Southampton is today an economic and logistical centre, particularly in shipping, technology and education. Southampton also has many parks and a rebuilt city centre after bombing during the Second World War.
Southampton Harbour – one of Europe's largest passenger ports and one of the UK's most important and busiest deep-sea ports, situated on the River Test and close to the English Channel. It is particularly renowned for its cruise traffic and is one of Europe's largest cruise ports, with millions of passengers each year. The port also handles containers, cars and oil products, and is vital to the UK's imports and exports. It has several terminals and modern infrastructure, and is a hub for both commercial shipping and tourism.
