Gotland is Sweden's largest island, located in the Baltic Sea, approximately 100 kilometers from the Swedish mainland. Gotland is also, together with the surrounding islands of Fårö, Karlsöarna, Gotska Sandön, Östergarnsholm and several smaller islands, a Swedish province. The province is also a county, a municipality and a diocese. Gotland has 92 medieval churches, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, in as many parishes. Sundre on southernmost Gotland is the smallest parish with 25 inhabitants and Visby is the largest with 24,364 inhabitants (2016). Visby's ring wall was built between 1250-1288 and was rebuilt and extended during the 14th century. Today it is 3.4 km long.
