Hornborjasjön, Trandansen - Sweden
Hornborgasjön is a lake in Västergötland, known for its unique bird fauna, especially the cranes. Every spring, thousands of cranes gather at the lake on their way north to the breeding grounds in Sweden and Finland. Trandansen is a nature reserve at Hornborgasjön that is particularly known as a gathering place for the cranes that return each spring. The site is built up with viewing points and walking paths that allow visitors to see thousands of cranes landing, feeding and gathering up close.
At Trandansen there is also Naturum Hornborgasjön, an information centre with exhibitions about the lake's ecology, birdlife and the annual crane migration. Naturum offers guides, observation towers and educational programmes that make the visit both educational and experiential. The cranes return to Hornborgasjön every spring, usually in March–April, to rest and forage on their way north. The annual gathering at Trandansen has made the area one of Sweden's best-known and most popular birdwatching destinations.
