Käringön, live webcams - Sweden
Käringön is a picturesque little island at the far end of the sea surrounded by salty crystal clear water. There are no cars, mopeds or bicycles and it is wonderful to visit Käringön all year round - perhaps best during the pre- and post-season. Almost all of the island's 280 houses were built before 1920 and this makes the whole environment genuine and beautiful. Most of the houses are widely used as holiday homes and for part-time living and there are barely 70 people who live here. There is a rich business community with many fine shops and restaurants and accommodation with everything from hostel standard to boutique hotels, so Käringön is very much a vibrant community.
Many people believe that the name Käringön has to do with mean women, but that is not true. The name comes from the Scottish word "cairn" which means sea mark (small stone tower or cairn). In Swedish it eventually became "Käringar". Since there was a "Käring" on our island, the name Käringön became.
The Käringön Entrepreneurs' Association runs the destination page karingon.info.
