Borgholm - Sweden
Borgholm is an urban area and municipality, located on the western side of Öland by Kalmarsund, in Kalmar County. Borgholm serves as one of Öland's administrative and commercial hubs and has long been important for trade, administration and tourism in northern and central Öland. Borgholm's history is closely linked to Borgholm Castle, the ruins of which lie just south of today's city centre. The castle began to be built during the Middle Ages and was rebuilt in several stages, including during the 17th century when it was given its current castle-like form. After a fire in the early 19th century, the building was abandoned, but the ruin is still a clear historical landmark. Borgholm received city rights in 1816 and developed during the 19th century as a health resort, which influenced the cityscape with parks, residential buildings and public buildings. The planned city structure with a grid pattern in central parts reflects this period.
