Tärnaby is located in Storuman municipality in Västerbotten County, on the E12 about 120 kilometers from Mo i Rana in Norway and about 130 kilometers from Storuman. Tärnaby has a population of about 500 inhabitants and Tärnaby is surrounded by magnificent nature such as mountains, lakes, marshes and natural areas for outdoor activities and recreation close to the community. Many of Sweden's biggest names in skiing originate from Tärnaby, both Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson grew up in Tärnaby. This and an active association life have contributed to skiing becoming part of the identity in Tärnaby. Tärnaby and Hemavan are geographically close communities, communications between the towns and further across the Norwegian border are therefore strategically important, both for tourism and for transport. About 5,500 people live in Storuman municipality. The area of the municipality is about 7,500 square kilometers, which is equivalent to about two and a half Gotland. This makes the municipality the twelfth largest in the country by area and the 263rd most populous, out of Sweden's total of 290 municipalities.
