The Weser River - an important waterway in Germany

The Weser is one of Germany's most important rivers and plays a central role in both nature, culture and economy. It flows through the northern part of the country and has long been an important transport route and a landscape element in several large cities, including Bremen. The Weser is formed at the city of Hann. Münden in the state of Lower Saxony, where the two rivers Werra and Fulda meet and flow into the North Sea near the city of Bremerhaven. The Weser is approximately 452 kilometers long and including the source river Werra, the total length is over 730 kilometers. The Weser flows only through Germany, making it the longest river in Germany that flows solely within the country's borders. Germany's longest river is the Rhine. The Rhine originates in Switzerland and flows through four countries before flowing into the North Sea after passing through the Netherlands.

Bremen is one of Germany's oldest and most well-known cities, located in the northwestern part of the country, on the River Weser. The city is the capital of the German state of Bremen, which also includes the nearby port city of Bremerhaven. With around 550,000 inhabitants, Bremen is one of Germany's largest cities and an important economic, cultural and historical centre. Bremen has a long and rich history spanning over 1,200 years. During the Middle Ages, the city was a significant member of the Hanseatic League – a powerful trading association that dominated trade in Northern Europe. Its strategic location on the Weser made Bremen a central point for both shipping and the exchange of goods. Bremen offers a wide range of culture with museums, theatres, art galleries and music festivals. Popular attractions include Universum Bremen – a science centre with interactive exhibitions – and the Schnoorviertel, a charming medieval quarter with narrow alleys and picturesque houses.
