Bremer Marktplatz - the central square in the old town center of Bremen

Bremen's Marktplatz is the central square in the old city center and one of the oldest squares in Germany. The square has been the city's political, economic and cultural center for over 1,000 years and is surrounded by some of Bremen's most iconic buildings. The magnificent Renaissance-style town hall was built in the early 15th century and is today one of Bremen's most famous buildings. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Roland Statue in front of it. The Roland Statue is an approximately 5.5-meter-high statue from 1404. Roland is a knight and a symbol of freedom and independence. According to legend, Bremen will remain free as long as the statue remains standing. Next to the Marktplatz is also the Church of Our Lady or Liebfrauenkirche as it is called in German. The church's origins date back to the 12th century, when a smaller chapel building was built on the site. The church is one of the city's oldest churches and a living memory of the Middle Ages. With its beautiful Gothic architecture and central location on the Marktplatz, it is an important cultural and religious landmark in Bremen.

Bremen is one of Germany's oldest and most well-known cities, located in the northwestern part of the country, on the River Weser. The city is the capital of the German state of Bremen, which also includes the nearby port city of Bremerhaven. With around 550,000 inhabitants, Bremen is one of Germany's largest cities and an important economic, cultural and historical centre. Bremen has a long and rich history spanning over 1,200 years. During the Middle Ages, the city was a significant member of the Hanseatic League – a powerful trading association that dominated trade in Northern Europe. Its strategic location on the Weser made Bremen a central point for both shipping and the exchange of goods. Bremen offers a wide range of culture with museums, theatres, art galleries and music festivals. Popular attractions include Universum Bremen – a science centre with interactive exhibitions – and the Schnoorviertel, a charming medieval quarter with narrow alleys and picturesque houses.
