Flensburg - about 8 km south of the border with Denmark
Flensburg is a port city in northern Germany, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, about 8 km from the border with Denmark. With about 90,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the state after Kiel and Lübeck. Flensburg is beautifully located on the Flensburger Förde, a bay of the Baltic Sea, and is known for its cross-border culture, maritime history and old town centre. In terms of language and culture, Flensburg is a mixture of German and Danish traditions, with bilingual schools, churches and associations. Flensburg was for a long time part of Denmark, until 1864, when the area became German after the Dano-Prussian War. Flensburg is strongly influenced by its maritime history. The city's old port quarter has been preserved and transformed into picturesque areas with cafes, sailboats and museums. Flensburg's centre has well-preserved alleys, merchant mansions and Gothic churches.
