Hamburg - a port city on the Elbe River, known for its extensive shipping, its canals and the historic warehouse district of Speicherstadt.

Hamburg is a port city in northern Germany, located on the Elbe River, about 100 kilometers from the North Sea. Hamburg's location has long played a central role in trade and shipping, and has shaped both the infrastructure and the cityscape. The Elbe River is an important waterway connecting Hamburg with the hinterland and the sea, making the city a hub for freight transport. The Port of Hamburg stretches along the southern and northern banks of the Elbe. The Port of Hamburg includes container terminals, industrial areas, shipyards and logistics centers. Although much of the activity is automated and industrial, there are also older parts that are accessible to the public. The port is important for the German economy and has connections with trade routes around the world. Adjacent to the port area is the Speicherstadt, an area of red brick buildings built in the late 19th century. These buildings were originally used as warehouses for goods such as coffee, spices and carpets. They stand on stilts in the tidal river system and are crisscrossed by canals, giving the place a distinct character. Today, many of the buildings are used for museums, offices and other public activities.
