Kiel - capital of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein

Kiel is the capital of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein and is located on the Kiel Förde (Kieler Förde) on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Kiel has around 250,000 inhabitants and is known for its importance as a naval base, ferry port and sailing centre. Kiel's geographical location on the Baltic Sea has made the city an important hub for shipping and shipbuilding. The Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal), the world's busiest artificial waterway, which connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea, begins or ends here. The canal is strategically important for both trade and maritime traffic. Kiel is also the base for the German Navy (Bundesmarine), and there are several shipyards, such as the well-known Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), which builds submarines and ships. Kiel has daily ferry connections to Sweden and Norway. Kiel is also a hub for cruise traffic, and thousands of passengers pass through the city every summer. In addition, it is easy to travel further by train or motorway from Kiel to Hamburg and the rest of Germany.
