Sitka - a city and municipality in the state of Alaska, located on Baranof Island on the southeast coast of Alaska. Sitka has approximately 8,000 inhabitants and is known for its scenic surroundings with mountains, sea and rainforest. Sitka has a rich history that stretches back to the time when the Tlingit people lived in the area. In 1804, Sitka became the capital of Russian America after Russia conquered the place from the Tlingit. Sitka was handed over to the United States in 1867 in connection with the purchase of Alaska, and the ceremony took place in Sitka. Today, Sitka is a cultural center with elements of both Russian and Native American history. The economy is based mainly on fishing, tourism and the public sector. The city is only accessible by boat or plane, as there are no roads connecting Sitka to the rest of Alaska.
