Southernmost Point Buoy – a Key West icon

Key West is a city located on the southernmost island of the Florida Keys, approximately 210 km south of Miami and only about 150 km from Cuba. It is the southernmost point in the continental United States and is reached via the scenic Overseas Highway (US Route 1), which connects the islands to the mainland. Key West is known for its relaxed atmosphere, tropical climate, historic charm and vibrant cultural life. It has long been a haunt of writers, artists and adventurers – among the most famous is Ernest Hemingway, whose former home is now a museum. Key West has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was a center for shipwreck salvage, trade and shipping. The city is also home to Naval Air Station Key West, an important military base.

Southernmost Point Buoy - one of the most famous landmarks in Key West, Florida, marking the southernmost point of the continental United States. The buoy is a large, colorful concrete structure painted in red, black, and yellow, with the inscription: "Southernmost Point Continental U.S.A / Key West, FL / 90 Miles to Cuba". It was erected in 1983 by the city government and has since become a popular tourist attraction and one of the most photographed places in Florida. Although the location is not the exact geographical southernmost point (it is located on military land nearby), the buoy is a symbolic marker and an important cultural element of Key West's identity. The buoy is located at the corner of Whitehead Street and South Street, and it is common for tourists to gather here to take pictures - especially at sunrise.

The webcam is presented by Southernmost Point Guest House and Digital Peak Productions.
