San Francisco is located on the west coast of the United States in northern California, on the San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge is a bridge spanning the San Francisco Bay, connecting San Francisco and Oakland. The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and consists of two main sections with a passage over Yerba Buena Island between them. The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge carries road traffic in both directions and is an important part of the region's transportation system. The eastern section has been rebuilt in modern times, while the western section has retained its original structure to a greater extent.
