Treasure Island – an ambitious urban transformation project
Treasure Island is an artificial island in San Francisco, located in the middle of San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland. Treasure Island was created in the 1930s by filling in parts of the bay, and it was originally built to house the Golden Gate International Exposition. The purpose of the exposition was to celebrate the newly built Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, and to showcase the region's development and future visions. After the exposition, Treasure Island took on a completely different role. During World War II, Treasure Island was taken over by the United States Navy and used as a training and administrative base for several decades. The military presence characterized the area well into the 20th century, and it was not until the 1990s that the Navy began to wind down its operations there. Since then, Treasure Island has gradually been transformed into a civilian area. Today, Treasure Island is known for its residential areas, open spaces, and spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline. Treasure Island attracts both residents and visitors who want to experience a quieter environment than the city center, while being close to the pulse of the metropolis. Plans for the future include extensive urban development with sustainable housing, parks and commercial spaces, making Treasure Island one of the most ambitious urban transformation projects in the region.
