Philadelphia - often called "Philly", one of the most important cities in the United States
Philadelphia, often called "Philly", is one of the most important cities in the United States – both historically and culturally. Located in the southeastern part of the state of Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River, the city is the largest in the state and has approximately 1.6 million inhabitants. Philadelphia is well known as one of the oldest cities in the United States and was a center of the American Revolution. In addition to its history, Philadelphia is a modern and diverse metropolis with rich traditions in culture, education, science and sports. It is home to prestigious universities such as the University of Pennsylvania and a strong medical network with several prominent hospitals. Philadelphia's art scene is lively with places such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is famous for its staircase, from the movie Rocky. Philadelphia is also known for its unique food culture, not least the classic Philly cheesesteak, a local pride. Philadelphia's different neighborhoods carry a distinct character, from the historic streets of Old City, to the Italian and African-American influences of South Philly, and the more bohemian parts of Fishtown.
Ben Franklin Parkway - one of the city's most famous and symbolic boulevards, often called Philadelphia's own version of the Champs-Élysées. Ben Franklin Parkway stretches in a wide, tree-lined arc from City Hall in downtown to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the famous statue of Rocky Balboa stands at the steps. Ben Franklin Parkway is named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and Philadelphia's most famous historical figure. It was planned in the early 20th century as part of an urban transformation inspired by European boulevards, and was inaugurated in 1918.
