Japan is an island country in the Pacific Ocean, east of China and Korea. It consists of four large islands (Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku) and thousands of smaller islands. The country is very mountainous and has many active volcanoes, including the famous Mount Fuji. Japan has about 125 million inhabitants. Most live in large cities, especially in the area around Tokyo, which is the world's largest metropolitan area in terms of population. Japan is a constitutional monarchy with an emperor (symbolic role) and an elected government. It is the world's third largest economy, known for high technology, the automotive industry (Toyota, Honda, Nissan) and electronics (Sony, Panasonic).
