Öland is Sweden's second largest island after Gotland and is located in the Baltic Sea, just east of Småland, with Kalmar as the nearest city on the mainland. The island is connected to the mainland via the Öland Bridge, one of Europe's longest bridges, 6,072 meters long. The bridge is designed to be able to move when the temperature changes. The length of the Öland Bridge can differ by as much as 3.3 meters between summer and winter. The Öland Bridge was inaugurated on September 30, 1972. Öland is known for its unique nature, cultural heritage and holiday atmosphere. Borgholm is the main town on Öland and is located in Borgholm Municipality on Öland's west coast, approximately in the middle of the island.
