Västerås is a city in central Sweden, located on the northern shore of Lake Mälaren in Västmanland County. Västerås is located approximately 100 km west of Stockholm and is the center of Västerås Municipality and the seat of Västmanland County. Västerås offers a mix of historical and modern experiences, with attractions such as Västerås Castle, Västerås Cathedral and the old city center Kyrkbacken. The city also has a rich cultural life and is home to Mälardalen University. Västerås is one of Sweden's oldest cities. Västra Aros is the origin of the city's name. Aros means river mouth, and it was where the Svartån flows into Lake Mälaren that the city's first permanent residents settled in the 13th century and the first buildings began to grow. Then things moved quickly - mining, shipping port, school town, market and trading center until industrialization, led by Asea, developed the city to its current population of just over 130,000.
