Darmstadt - Germany

Darmstadt is located in the German state of Hesse, with around 160,000 inhabitants. Darmstadt is located south of Frankfurt am Main and is known for its role in research, technology and the arts. Darmstadt is officially recognised as a “Wissenschaftsstadt”, city of science, due to its strong connection to research and technology. It is home to the highly regarded Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD), where engineers and researchers are trained and develop the technology of the future. But Darmstadt is not only a city of technology, it is also a place with a rich cultural and artistic heritage. During the early 20th century, the city became a centre for the German Art Nouveau style through the artists’ colony on Mathildenhöhe. Artists, architects and designers gathered here under the patronage of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. The city has an efficient public transport system, many green spaces, proximity to the Odenwald mountain region, and a wide range of cultural activities. It is an international city, largely thanks to the university and research centres, but it also retains its regional identity and warmth.
