Missouri is a state in the Midwestern United States, with approximately 6 million inhabitants. The state capital is Jefferson City, while the largest city is Kansas City. Missouri borders eight other states, making it one of the most centrally located states in the United States. The economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and the service sector. Missouri is known for its role in the expansion of the United States westward, including through the Oregon Trail and the city of St. Louis, which is often called the "Gateway to the West".
