Husum - Germany
Husum is a small port town in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the North Sea coast in the region of North Frisia. With around 23,000 inhabitants, the town is known for its maritime heritage and its colorful houses. Husum is characterized by its harbor tradition. It used to be a lively trading and fishing town, and today the harbor still plays an important role, both as a marina and as a place for tourism and events. Husum's city center is small but full of life and character. It is located near the harbor and is surrounded by colorful old houses, cobblestone streets and cozy alleys. The atmosphere is typically northern German - maritime, relaxed and genuine. Every year in March, the castle park in Husum is transformed into a seascape of purple flowers during what is called Krokusblüte, the crocus bloom. The crocus field is one of the largest in Northern Europe and attracts thousands of visitors every spring. The purple color against the white facade of the castle is an iconic postcard motif for Husum. There are said to be more than 4 million wild crocuses, probably planted by monks during the Middle Ages.
